Department of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy at Birmingham has ten permanent members of staff with research interests in a range of areas in analytic philosophy. We can offer expertise in metaphysics and epistemology; philosophy of language, mind and action; ethics, ethical theory and global ethics.  In addition, the Department has research interests in the history of philosophy (Hobbes, Descartes, Hume, Kant, Schopenhauer, Wittgenstein), philosophy of religion, and philosophy of science

The latest Research Assessment Exercise ranked 85% of our research output, for which all staff were submitted, as being 'world class', 'internationally excellent', or 'internationally recognised'. The Birmingham Philosophy Department has also performed very well in the latest edition of the Philosophical Gourmet Report, edited by Professor Brian Leiter (University of Chicago). The Leiter PGR is the most widely known international ranking of philosophy departments, and the results are based on the evaluations of over 300 leading philosophers worldwide. Birmingham only very narrowly missed making it into the UK top 15. The Department scored better than Manchester and Exeter, equal with Glasgow, and was behind Durham by only a tiny margin

This diverse research base is reflected in what students can study as part of our undergraduate programme. As well as quantity, we are also committed to providing the highest level of quality in teaching, alongside ensuring a pleasant and friendly environment for our students to enjoy their university education. The course offers a wide variety of choice, and is unique in offering independent research modules at all years in order to prepare our students for their final year project (the 'dissertation'). Our undergraduate course can also be combined with many different courses as part of a Joint Honours programme.

We also offer an assortment of postgraduate programmes, ranging from purely taught courses to research courses. Our research based courses are perfect for those planning for a career in professional academia, whilst we offer a selection of other courses for those who are interested either in complementing their non-academic vocation or (of course!) studying philosophy solely for pleasure.
